WYLDE OAK café - Sapphire Beach, mid-north coast of NSW

You’ve possibly never read a food review for a café inside a plant nursery before, because usually they aren’t worth writing about – but this one is!

A family business, Ben Wilson and Scott Tarlinton opened WYLDE OAK café in September 2022 offering a contemporary, seasonal menu. Their background in hospitality is evident, scoring consistently good reviews from Sapphire Beach locals and beyond.

On each of my visits I’ve found their food consistently good, with produce sourced from local farmers, and given respect on the plate. The café is situated inside the Coffs Garden World, an expanded garden and lifestyle collaboration space, which includes Coffs Harbour Nursery.

People first discover this café for a variety of reasons: after checking out the range of nursery plants, or after talking chainsaws in the power tools shop.

Now the café itself is a destination, so I recommend you call and reserve a table.

Before I discuss the food, there are several practical things I like about this café.

There’s plenty of onsite parking - but wait, there's more.

Ordering your meal and paying for it at the counter simplifies everything, including when you have a large table and everyone wants to split the bill a gazillion ways.

Café tables are situated on the relaxed outdoor deck, in the fresh air - I find that a covid-friendly plus.

The deck overlooks the plant nursery, which is a relaxing vista whether you’re a gardener or not.

Wylde Oak is open for breakfast and lunch. My favourites are on the lunch menu – the Charr Green (sauce) Chicken is a generous serve of tender char-grilled chicken served with a wedge of dressed iceberg lettuce, and it’s really good.

The Prawn Chorizo Linguine is generous, and there are usually two vegetarian options, currently Hawaij Cauliflower, or try the Dukkah Roast Pumpkin.

There’s a nice buzz of conversation around you, but that you can also hear each other talk. That’s one of the reasons I chose this café as the venue for my foodies book club. The menu also satisfies a variety of appetites.

Wylde Oak offers contemporary food, in a pretty, outdoor setting. And there’s more to come, including live music on weekends… stay tuned!
